Several people on the right have noted that the elite universities in the united states were founded by puritanical religious types in order to train preachers. When this is understood, its not strange after all to see the lengths that these kids will go to enforce so called secular liberal perspective. They haven't lost their puritanical roots.

I don't know if this model is correct, or if current trends are not informed by deeper factors. Not only the Puritans historically have moved aggressively against varieties of heresy. One of the bloodiest was the continent-wide European witch craze of the sixteenth and seventeenth century following the general social crisis occasioned by the Reformation. In any situation characterized by insecure authority and schismatic religion one could expect to see a growth of forms of superstition and fanatical demands for fighting heresy.
